Wedge shaped Lines

This I chose for this weeks technique because the cloud and its reflection make wedged lines, creating a frame, which highlights the view up toward the rivers mouth. I have also created an album of other shots on leading lines which you can view as a slideshow or if you prefer the album itself.

My Backyard Over the Summer

The Satin Bowerbird

I took many photos over the summer of local birds that visited my back yard. Of all the photos The one above is my favourite. I chose this photo because this particular bird, the Satinbird or Bowerbird, is an extemely shy bird and so very dificult to photograph - they are so skittish. I have included an album of the different birds for you to look at if you wish - you will find a link at the bottom of this post. I suggest you use the slideshow to view the photos.

The most notable characteristic of bowerbirds is their extraordinarily complex courtship and mating behaviour, where males build a bower to attract mates. There are two main types of bowers. One clade of bowerbirds build so-called maypole bowers, which are constructed by placing sticks around a sapling; in some species, these bowers have a hut-like roof. The other major bowerbuilding clade builds an avenue type-bower made of two walls of vertically placed sticks. In and around the bower, the male places a variety of brightly colored objects he has collected. These objects — usually different among each species — may include hundreds of shells, leaves, flowers, feathers, stones, berries, and even discarded plastic items, coins, nails, rifle shells, or pieces of glass. The males spend hours arranging this collection. Bowers within a species share a general form but do show significant variation, and the collection of objects reflects the biases of males of each species and its ability to procure items from the habitat, often stealing them from neighboring bowers. Several studies of different species have shown that colors of decorations males use on their bowers match the preferences of females.

Mate-searching females commonly visit multiple bowers, often returning to the male several times, watching his elaborate courtship displays and inspecting the quality of the bower and tasting the paint the male has placed on the bower walls. Many females end up selecting the same male, and many under-performing males are left without copulations. Females mated with top-mating males tend to return to the male the next year and search less. Bowerbirds have also been observed creating optical illusions in their bowers to appeal to mates. They arrange objects in the bower's court area from smallest to largest, creating aforced perspective which holds the attention of the female for longer. Males with objects arranged in a way that have a strong optical illusion are likely to have higher mating success. - (wikipedia)

Picture Perfect - Whats the Point

Pointy Pointy

A very diferent approach to the theme this week from Cherie with her theme 'What's the Point. Here I have a very hairy Caterpillar with lots of pointy pointed ends to those hairs, crawling across a Bomeliad which, as you see, is very pointy and thorny indeed. But, to top it off, that little garden of flowers, and pointy things in the middle of the plant, makes for exceptionally pointy points, as an example of What's the point'! So whats my point??? Of course - Pointy Things are!!

The Ocean Today

Wild Sea

The Sea, yesterday just before dusk, was a bit on the wild side. Not overly huge waves but a fair bit of power and extra surge in them. The photo above I think captures the wildness I saw when I got to that part of the beach. Because the sea is constantly moving and no wave looking at all like another I had to shoot a whole series of shots, maybe as many as 30 hoping I could capture the wildness that had first caught my eye. When all the waves are doing their thing at the same time as my finger is pressing the button is mostly a matter of luck. as it is hard to line up a shot and study the waves at the same time. Anyway I have put together some photos of the ocean taken over the last few days for those of you who enjoy ocean seascapes

Picture Perfect - Green

Diffused Green

This week the Picture Perfect theme is Green so I thought this time to be creative and find something green without going back to my files. It was more difficult than I first thought - having attempted different greens of various subjects, they just did not come out on my screen as they did in my head. The one I chose to post, above, is one that came close to my minds eye. It is part of a decorative decanter with a sunlit, green, stained glass background diffused through the pattern of the decanter. I kinda like it!!

This Bridge is on the way to our local supermarket in Laurieton. I drive and cycle past and over this bridge a few times a week and always, always I feel the need to stop and take a photo. As you can see it is very picturesque. These shallow waters of the river are where local Oyster farmers grow and harvest Sydney Rock Oysters. You can see them in the photos. The few houses you see behind the trees in the photo above is the back end of the small town of Laurieton - nestled into the base of the mountain behind.

Pacific Ocean Water

Living next to the ocean one would think I would have ample shots to take. I spent three days trying to find something interesting and different - something with a wow factor but alas not. Not sure if it was the very dull light and dirty sea from all the storms of late or a lack of inspiration but this is the best I could come up with. I have included an album of all my rejects. I looked at them all but found there was nothing I could do with them but I have included them here for you anyway!! I added a couple in colour as I like the colours in them. My archives are full of shots I would love to have converted to monochrome but thats not the point of this group! Anyway here it is my choice!!!

The Shadow Self

The shadow is that part of the self that we don’t want to see, that we’re afraid of and we don’t want others to see either. If our “actor” (ego) is well-defended and in denial, the shadow is always hated and projected elsewhere (we tend to hate our own faults in OTHER people!). One point here is crucial: The shadow self is not of itself evil; it just allows you to do evil without recognizing it as evil! That is why Jesus criticizes hypocrisy more than anything else. He does not hate sinners at all, but only people who pretend they are not sinners! Matthew 23

Jesus’ phrase for the denied shadow is “the plank in your own eye,” which you invariably see as the “splinter in your brother’s eye.” Jesus’ advice is absolutely perfect. “Take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly enough to take the splinter out of your brother’s eye” Matthew 7:4-5.

The Boatshed - Across the River

I spend a few hours with my camera on a walk yesterday and then this morning when I dropped my daughter down to the shops in Laurieton (the next town to Bonny Hills) I spent some time on the river shooting in wide angle. This above, is my choice to post for the theme! I thought, too, that I would add a photo album to show the original photos I chose from and then the  crops I did afterward. As an after thought, perhaps it might be a good idea for us all to do an album in the future to show our efforts and the thinking we put into the theme. All these shots are all taken on 28mm wideangle setting.

My locality in wide angle - for the group Next Shot

This set of photos I took for the wideangle theme for the Group - Next Shot. The photos I have arranged with the original first followed by cropped versions that I created from them. The idea was to make them all then decide which to post. I thought it a nice idea to post all the photos I took for the theme - might be a good thing for us all to do in the future to show our efforts and thinking we put into the theme. The last shot is just an example of a wide angle.

Picture Perfect Winter Competition #6 - Utopia

When a dream comes true!

Can you imagine the joy when your image of Utopia, your long held vision of the ideal life in your idea of a perfect place finally becomes realised. For this Chinese Student, from Shanghai, Australia was that imagined Utopia. She had yearned for and dreamed of this moment since a child. On a cold and blustery winters day, standing on Bondi Beach, she knew it was no longer a dream but real. She had arrived in Sydney about two days previous but not until this very moment did it seem to be real to her. So caught up in the emotion she leaped, shreaking into the cold salty air, taking in every last drop of the moment!!
